4 Air Quality Tips for Households With Babies & Children

If you have babies or young children, you should be especially concerned about the indoor air quality (IAQ) of your home. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, infants and school-age children are more vulnerable to the effects of contaminated air than adults because they breathe in more oxygen proportional to their body weight.

Luckily, you can take steps to improve your home’s IAQ and help safeguard your children’s health. Here are some ways to reduce harmful pollutants and improve the air inside your home.

1. Add more plants in your home. Indoor plants aren’t only for decoration; they also aid in enhancing IAQ in a cost-effective manner. Photosynthesis allows plants to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which improves IAQ. By transpiring water vapor through leaf pores, they also passively absorb contaminants and increase humidity.

2. Invest in an air purifier. In addition to the HVAC system, this is one of the top must-haves in home nurseries and kids bedrooms. The right air purifier can greatly enhance air quality by capturing airborne pollutants. It can also encourage more peaceful and restorative sleep, especially for infants and young children.

3. Change your air filters regularly. Dust, pet dander and other allergens can flow throughout your home via the ductwork if your air filters are clogged and dirty. Make sure these filters are replaced regularly to ensure the ongoing operation of your HVAC system and keep indoor air free from pollutants. If your child has asthma or severe allergies, make sure the filters are changed more frequently.

4. Keep your home clean. A tidy home is a healthy home. You help to get rid of pet dander, dust and mold in your home by cleaning on a regular basis. You should clean carpets and rugs at least once a week using a vacuum with a HEPA filter to enhance the air quality in your home.
