How to Tell If Your AC Unit Is Undersized

When it comes to maintaining a comfortable and energy-efficient home, the size of your air conditioning unit matters more than you might think. An undersized AC system can struggle to keep your space cool, especially during the peak of summer, leading to discomfort and rising energy costs. Understanding the signs of an undersized AC unit can help you take timely action before small issues turn into major problems.

Your AC Isn’t Cooling the Home Effectively

One of the most obvious signs of an undersized air conditioner is its inability to cool your home properly. AC systems are designed to remove warm air and humidity before circulating cool air back into your living space. To do this effectively, the unit must have the appropriate number of BTUs (British Thermal Units) for your home’s square footage, insulation, sun exposure, and occupancy. If the BTU capacity is too low, the system will struggle to maintain your desired indoor temperature on hot days.

Inconsistent Temperatures Between Rooms

Uneven cooling throughout your home is another red flag. A properly sized AC unit should be able to cool all rooms consistently. If you notice that some areas feel significantly warmer than others, it may indicate that your unit lacks the capacity to evenly distribute cooled air across the entire home.

Continuous Operation and Rising Energy Bills

If your AC seems to run nonstop without ever reaching the set temperature, it could be too small for your space. Ideally, an AC should cycle on and off once the desired temperature is reached. When a unit is undersized, it runs continuously in an attempt to meet the demand, resulting in increased energy consumption and higher utility bills. This nonstop operation can also lead to premature wear and tear on system components.

High Indoor Humidity

A well-functioning air conditioner does more than cool your home—it also helps control humidity levels. If your home feels overly humid despite the AC running, the unit may not be large enough to handle the moisture load. In humid climates and hot summer months, such as those in Central California, insufficient dehumidification can make your indoor environment feel sticky and uncomfortable.

Weak Airflow from Vents

Low airflow from your vents may also point to an undersized AC unit. While a clogged filter or blocked ductwork could be the cause, if these issues are ruled out and airflow remains weak, it’s possible the system simply doesn’t have the strength to circulate sufficient air throughout the house. Poor airflow results in inefficient cooling and reduced comfort.
