Keeping Pollen & Springtime Allergens Out of Your HVAC System

FacebookTwitterEmailShare

As spring progresses, you can expect cases of seasonal allergies to rise as well. Pollen and allergens can enter through small openings or gaps in your home, and these can quickly affect your indoor air quality. That said, it’s essential to understand how your HVAC system can filter these allergens and prevent them from affecting your health.

In this post, Superior Air shares tips and tricks for keeping pollen out of your HVAC system and home.

  • Keep your windows closed. To cool your house, use your air conditioner instead of opening the windows. Open windows can easily let pollen and contaminants into your house — which can pollute your indoor air and cause allergies.
  • Find HEPA filters that match your AC unit. Learn the specific model and filter requirements of your air conditioner. HVAC and air conditioning maintenance experts usually recommend HEPA filters to trap contaminants and prevent them from penetrating further into your home. Keep in mind that your filters should be changed regularly to maintain effective filtration.
  • Clean your HVAC ducts. Even as pollen gets trapped in air filters, the spores can still infiltrate your house through the ducts. This causes the contaminants to remain in your system, which can then lead to health concerns and HVAC issues. To keep your ducts in excellent condition, have them cleaned by professionals regularly.
  • Wash your air conditioner. Although pollen can’t clog your outdoor unit, it’s still best to spray it down with water. This prevents dirt and other contaminants from settling on the surfaces of your outdoor unit.
