How Air Conditioners Are Made

The air conditioning unit is one of the most important things in your home. It’s what helps you keep cool and what makes the harsh summer months more tolerable. While many homeowners know how important they are, few know how they are made.

Superior Air, your air conditioning installation expert, discusses how air conditioners are made in this blog post.

What They’re Made Of

AC units are made of sheet steel and other malleable metals or plastic. The first step in the manufacturing process is forming the metal and plastic parts of the unit. For the metal components, these are usually sheets stamped to give them shape and trim them down. As for the plastic, these are vacuum formed.

The metal parts are then galvanized – a process which adds a layer of zinc on the material to give it some rust resistance, slow down deterioration, and make future air conditioning maintenance easier to do. Once that’s done, the steel parts are either painted or powder coated.

Assembling the Unit

After each component is made, the unit is ready for assembly. This is simpler than it seems as it only involves installing the compressor, the inside condenser, and the outside condenser. The condensers are then connected to the compressor using copper pipes while the electric controls are connected to the electric motor.

The Finishing Touches

After assembly,  the coolant gas is placed in the compressor and the condensers and pipes are set to a predetermined pressure level. At this point, the AC unit is already finished and will undergo testing for coolant leaks and electronic functions.
