Understanding HEPA Filter Limitations

Having high-quality indoor air is essential. Most homeowners rely on their HVAC system when it comes to this matter, but while the usual HVAC systems are equipped with air filters that can provide air filtration, they don’t address air quality issues caused by microscopic organic airborne contaminants.

This is where the HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter comes in. It closes the gap and ensures maximum air filtration in your household. Even so, this filter has several limitations. Superior Air, your air conditioning maintenance partner, lists some of them below.

It Can’t Filter Out 100% of Allergens

While a HEPA filter is used to stop pollutants from entering your home, it can’t guarantee the removal of every particle from your indoor air. Viruses, bacteria, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and mold that are less than 0.4 microns can still penetrate your household and negatively affect your indoor air quality.

Furthermore, make sure to check your HEPA filter and see if it has an “Absolute HEPA” or “True HEPA” label. This means that it’s been manufactured by Department of Energy contractors and is proven to remove 99.7% of airborne particles. Filters that don’t meet DOE specifications are often labeled as “HEPA-type,” “HEPA-like,” or “HEPA-style.”

It Needs Frequent Replacement

Filtering various kinds of particles all day, every day can easily cause a HEPA filter to clog up and become less effective. Many air conditioning repair and maintenance companies advise homeowners to change their HEPA filters at least once and often twice a year, which can be costly.

It Has Limited Coverage

To achieve well-filtered air, it must first pass through the HEPA filter, yet even the largest HEPA filter can only cover a single room or at most a small apartment. This means that only nearby air can be purified.

Understanding what HEPA filters can and can’t do is important in making the most of your HVAC system.
