Why Are Your Air Ducts Noisy?

Noisy air ducts can be annoying, but should they set alarm bells ringing? A number of factors could be causing such noises, and while some of them are harmless, others are not so much. Today, Superior Air sheds light on a few of the most probable explanations for loud ductwork.

Excessive Static Pressure

Ask any experienced furnace and air conditioning maintenance professional about duct noises, and they’ll most likely put the blame on high static pressure. This phenomenon means your HVAC system is struggling to move air.

Apart from adjusting the fan speed, there’s nothing you can do personally to quiet your HVAC system. Other feasible solutions to address high static pressure are installing a bypass duct, integrating more ductwork into the system and replacing current grilles and registers with high-velocity versions.

Furthermore, air will not move properly through the ductwork when there are sections which are sagging or bent. These structural issues can only be fixed by timely furnace and air conditioning repair

The HVAC Infrastructure Isn’t Optimal

When an air handler or furnace is ducted to a wall opening with a grille on the opposite side of the central return, it can be difficult to render the airflow less audible. If this is the case for you, the HVAC system’s configuration will need to be changed.

New Equipment Has Been Installed

If you suddenly hear popping noises coming from your ducts after a furnace or air conditioner installation project, your ductwork might not be compatible with your new system. These unpleasant sounds may also stem from fan or blower vibration. A delayed furnace ignition could be a possible cause of the racket as well. Fortunately, you can call in a professional to troubleshoot all of these noise sources.

Don’t take HVAC noises lightly, as they could be symptoms of more serious problems. Call Superior Air at (800) 462-0020 to request service in Hanford, CA, and have one of our credentialed technicians uncover what’s behind the odd sounds you’ve been hearing.
