Signs It’s Time to Upgrade Your Air Conditioner

Knowing when to bid farewell to your current AC system can be a balancing act. After all, you wouldn’t want to continue with skyrocketing energy bills or experience a breakdown in the middle of a heatwave. A properly maintained unit can last you for quite some time, but even the best appliance has an expiration date. To help you out, Superior Air explains some of the telltale signs below.

High Energy Bills

One of the most tell-tale signs that you might need a new air conditioning installation is noticeably higher energy bills. Older units often require significantly more power to operate, increasing energy costs. If you notice a considerable spike in your bills, especially when your AC use is unchanged, this might be a good indicator that its efficiency isn’t what it used to be.

Inconsistent Temperatures

It may be a sign to invest in a replacement if you’re feeling uncomfortable even when the air conditioning is running or if some rooms are much colder than others. These inconsistencies may indicate a declining AC system.

Increased Humidity

A well-functioning air conditioning unit will control humidity levels, keeping your home comfort levels balanced. But if you’re noticing a damp or muggy feeling in your home, it might be a sign that your AC is not as efficient in removing humidity as before.

Frequent Repairs

While occasional air conditioning repair is expected, reoccurring issues can signal that your unit is near the end of its lifespan. Not only can frequent repairs be costly, but they are also disruptive and often a sign that the unit is failing. If your unit requires consistent fixes or breakdowns, it may be more cost-effective to consider installing a new unit in the long run.

Odd Noises or Smells

These could be signs of trouble if you notice strange noises, like grinding, squeaking, or banging, or detect unpleasant smells coming from your AC. Unusual noises suggest something mechanically wrong, which can manifest as a costly issue over time. Smells could indicate mold growth, which can pose health risks for your household.

The Age of Your AC

According to the Department of Energy, the average lifespan of an air conditioner is about 15 to 20 years. Even with regular air conditioning maintenance, parts will inevitably wear out and efficiency will decline. If your AC unit is reaching or has exceeded this age range, it’s probably time to consider a replacement.
