Basic Heat Pump Troubleshooting for Homeowners

Heat pumps are a popular choice for homeowners because of their dual functionality, offering both heating and cooling for year-round comfort. Despite their efficiency and versatility, heat pumps can still encounter problems. Knowing how to troubleshoot basic issues can help you maintain your system and avoid unnecessary service calls.

Incorrect Thermostat Settings

One of the most common issues affecting heat pump performance is incorrect thermostat settings. It is easy to accidentally set your thermostat to “cool” during winter or to a temperature that is not optimal for the season. In summer, set your thermostat to around 78°F. In winter, keep it between 68°F and 72°F for both comfort and efficiency. Check that your thermostat is in the correct mode and properly calibrated. Upgrading to a smart thermostat can also help automate temperature control and reduce the need for manual adjustments.

Dirty Air Filters and Coils

Your heat pump relies on proper airflow to work efficiently. Dirty air filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder and reducing its efficiency. Clean filters every two weeks and replace them every three to four months. The indoor and outdoor coils also need to be kept clean to ensure effective heat transfer. Dirty coils can significantly impact performance, so regular cleaning is essential.

Refrigerant Leaks

Refrigerant is essential for heat transfer in your system. If your heat pump is low on refrigerant due to a leak, it will not heat or cool your home effectively. Refrigerant issues require professional attention because they are complex and can pose environmental hazards.

Outdoor Unit Obstructions

The outdoor unit of your heat pump must have clear airflow to function properly. Debris such as leaves, snow, or ice can block airflow, causing reduced efficiency or malfunctions. Check and clear the area around your outdoor unit regularly, especially after storms or harsh weather.

Heat Pump Not Heating or Cooling

If your heat pump is not producing heat or cool air, the cause could be one of the previously mentioned issues or more complex problems like a faulty compressor or broken reversing valve. If basic troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, it is best to call a professional.

When to Call a Professional

While homeowners can handle basic maintenance, some problems require professional expertise. This includes refrigerant handling, electrical repairs, or diagnosing advanced system malfunctions.
