A Comparison of Residential and Commercial HVAC Systems

Residential and commercial HVAC systems have different sizing, performance, design, and ideal location. Keep reading as Superior Air discusses the main differences between these two types of systems.

Size

Residential HVAC systems are designed for small- to medium-sized spaces, making them smaller than a typical commercial HVAC system. Commercial HVAC systems, on the other hand, are ideal for larger structures or buildings. This explains why their thermostats, compressors, evaporators, and other components are different from their residential counterparts.

Modular Design

Commercial HVAC systems handle different cooling and heating conditions with accurate sensors, measuring instruments, and adjusters. This performance level requires a complex modular system design. The unit can be enhanced with new components to improve the unit’s capacity later.

Drainage

Moisture production between the two HVAC systems varies greatly. Residential units only use a small pan and tube, while commercial equipment uses custom piping to remove more moisture.

Location

Commercial HVAC units are often installed above the facility to save space and prevent interfering with operations on the ground. Residential HVAC units usually have ground-installed condensers for easier cleaning and maintenance.

Maintenance

Residential HVAC systems can use a standard maintenance routine due to their similarities in design and specifications. Commercial systems, however, require technicians specializing in complex modular units to identify and troubleshoot issues.

Cost

The cost difference between residential and commercial HVACs is huge. Considering all that we’ve mentioned above, commercial units are expensive because of their case-specific application. Furthermore, a commercial HVAC installer charges a higher fee because it takes more time to install, maintain and repair commercial HVAC systems.
