How Long Do Residential Heating & Cooling Systems Last?

Residential heating and cooling systems are expected to last a certain number of years. The length of time can vary depending on certain factors. In today’s post, air conditioning installation company Superior Air discusses these factors.

How Long Do Heating & Cooling Systems Last?

The differences in heating and cooling systems’ expected lifespans vary depending on their type. A typical gas furnace is expected to last 20 to 30 years, while an oil furnace typically lasts up to 15 years. While they’re both furnaces, the latter has a shorter expected lifespan due to its less-efficient fuel. A traditional boiler is expected to last up to 35 years.

Cooling systems have a different set of expected lifespans. With regular air conditioning maintenance, a standard whole-home air conditioner can be expected to last 15 to 30 years. Ductless mini-split air conditioners provide cooling for relatively smaller spaces, and are typically expected to last 30 years. Heat pumps — which are basically reversible air conditioners — are used about twice as long in a year, and usually have shorter expected lifespans.

Factors That Affect Heating & Cooling System Lifespans

It’s important to note that expected lifespans are different from expiry dates. It’s possible to get more years out of your heating and cooling systems, but early failure is also possible. The following are some of the factors that can affect their lifespans one way or the other.

• Local conditions — Homes near coastal areas are exposed to higher levels of salt in the air, which causes corrosion on mechanical systems.

• Poor maintenance — HVAC systems are exposed to wear on a daily basis, which is why keeping up a regular maintenance routine is a must. The sooner worn-out components are replaced, the fewer the chances of an unexpected breakdown.

• Improper usage — HVAC systems come with instructions for proper usage, such as using them in closed environments and setting them within a range of temperatures. Improper usage can increase wear on these systems, which may affect their expected lifespans. If you’re unsure whether or not you’re using your heating and cooling systems properly, ask your HVAC technician.
