Uneven Heating: Causes & Solutions

FacebookTwitterEmailShare

If you feel colder in some areas of your home than others despite raising your heating system’s temperature, there could be several reasons for this. Here your air conditioning maintenance professionals from Superior Air share the common causes of uneven heating and how to efficiently address them.

  • Dirty filters. People are often reminded that prevention is better than cure. Like your HVAC upkeep, it’s better to prioritize maintenance by performing regular cleaning instead of waiting until a repair, or worse, a replacement is necessary. Air filters caked with dirt and dust act like blocked vents. Whenever filters are clogged with debris, air cannot pass through them as quickly, which forces the furnace to work doubly as hard. Here’s a tip: schedule inspections with a licensed technician who can also change your filters. Filter changes should be done at least every three months.

  • Blocked vents. Vents require several feet of space to distribute treated air properly, so make sure there are no couches, dressers or curtains covering them. If a blockage isn’t due to dirt, it’s likely that homeowners have accidentally blocked the unit’s airflow with furniture or other objects. When a room is too cool for your liking, any air conditioning repair contractor would suggest taking a closer look at the placement of your household items.

  • Malfunctioning thermostat. You may notice your heat pump isn’t pumping at the right average speed. This means heat isn’t reaching your radiators, hence the reason for the cold room. You can fix this by either recalibrating or replacing the thermostat.

  • Incorrect HVAC sizeAlthough this isn’t always the case, if the temperature differentiation only occurs in the winter with your heating, there’s a chance that your HVAC system is the wrong size for your home. This is proof that it’s critical to research before purchasing equipment. Nonetheless, you can call a local technician to do a load calculation and identify the appropriate size of furnace you need.
