What Causes Noisy HVAC Ducts?

We have discussed in this blog page the many different types of HVAC system noises — banging, clanking, thumping or squealing — and what they mean. What’s often overlooked when it comes to such disturbances is that these strange sounds can also come from your home’s ductwork. Here, our air conditioning repair professionals will highlight the top causes behind these noises and what you can do to prevent them from occurring.

Duct Expansion and Contraction

Duct expansion and contraction due to temperature changes are common causes of noisy HVAC ducts, resulting in cracking or popping sounds. To reduce the noise, seal your ducts with mastic and mesh tape. This will also help prevent any air movement and reduce the sound.

Closed or Blocked Vents

Closed or partially blocked vents can lead to loud noises in the ductwork. If a vent is blocked or blocked by a piece of furniture, it can create an imbalance in the air pressure. This leads to loud thumping and banging noises throughout the system. To fix the issue, open any closed vents and make sure that they are unobstructed.

Old Air Filters

Outdated air filters can be a major source of noise due to the restriction of airflow. When your air filter is clogged with dust and debris, it can cause loud whistling and whining from the ventilation system. Most air conditioning maintenance technicians recommend changing your air filter at least every one to three months to prevent this issue.

Improper Duct Sizing and Design

This issue can create serious noise coming from the ductwork. When the ducts are too small, the air can move too quickly, resulting in loud banging and thumping sounds. If the ducts are too large, the air can become turbulent, leading to rattling and rumbling noises. Be sure to work with an experienced HVAC installation company to ensure your ducts are correctly sized and designed for consistent air distribution and a quiet and comfortable indoor environment.

Loose or Unbalanced Dampers

Loose or unbalanced dampers are another potential source of noise coming from the ductwork. Dampers control airflow through the ducts, and they can rattle or vibrate if they aren’t properly secured or balanced. By ensuring that your dampers are secured, you can reduce the risk of noise and keep your system running smoothly.

Debris

Debris or obstructions in the ducts, like dust, dirt, or even small animals, can also lead to unpleasant noises. It’s important to have your system regularly inspected and cleaned by a professional technician to help prevent a buildup of dust and debris in the ducts. Additionally, make sure that your vents are not blocked by furniture or other objects, as this can create airflow issues and lead to loud noises.

Solutions to Noisy HVAC Ducts

Regular maintenance remains the best solution to preventing noisy ducts and ensuring the smooth operation of your HVAC system. Routine inspections and cleanings can help identify and remove obstructions, tighten loose components, and address minor issues before they escalate into bigger problems. Being proactive with your HVAC maintenance and trusting the repair tasks to the professionals can ensure that your HVAC system operates at peak efficiency with minimal noise disruption.
