Why You Should Routinely Replace Your HVAC System’s Filters

Don’t forget to replace your HVAC system’s air filters this fall. As a general rule, you should replace them every three months. But why is it important to replace dirty air filters?

Superior Air, your trusted air conditioning installation contractor, lists the reasons below:

HVAC efficiency. Clogged air filters create more airflow resistance than normal, making it harder for your HVAC system to distribute air. This, in turn, may create hot and cold spots in your house.

Clogged air filters can also cause your HVAC system to short cycle. Short cycling occurs when your HVAC system turns on and off repeatedly without completing a full cooling cycle. Short cycling is a problem because it increases the strain on your HVAC system’s sensitive components and can potentially shorten its lifespan. That’s why it’s important to replace your air filters at least once every three months.

Keep in mind that improper thermostat placement or the wrong HVAC unit size can also cause short cycling. If your unit keeps turning on and off despite the filters being routinely replaced, you should have an HVAC and air conditioning repair contractor conduct an inspection.

Avoiding repairs. By routinely changing your system’s air filters and having your HVAC unit inspected at least once a year, you can reduce the strain on the unit and avoid costly repairs.

Indoor air quality. Air filters are responsible for removing dust and other airborne particles circulating in your home. If the filters are clogged, indoor air quality will drop, which may aggravate respiratory conditions.

Important note: You may need to replace the air filters more frequently if you have pets or allergies. Households with pets should replace filters every three months, while those with allergies should replace them every six weeks.

Superior Air has been offering professional HVAC and air conditioning maintenance services to the local community since 1994. To schedule an inspection, call us at (559) 734-2002 or fill out this form. We serve homeowners in Tulare, as well as surrounding communities in CA.
